Billing & Insurance

Billing & Insurance

Pat Walker Heath Center works to provide affordable and convenient services for the campus community. While some health center services have charges associated that may be covered by your health insurance policy, you are not required to have insurance to use medical and mental health services. However, our medical clinics and psychiatry services do have office visit charges associated; see our Charges Policy.

For information about the University of Arkansas student health insurance policy, see our Student Insurance page. The student health insurance policy is offered by Academic Health Plans and is underwritten by United Healthcare Student Resources.

Medical Services

Medical office visit charges will be billed to your insurance carrier unless you tell us not to at the time of service. You are responsible for your co-payment as designated by your insurance carrier; see our Charges Policy.

There are charges for all medications, supplies and procedures used to diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries including:

  • Allergy shots

  • Immunizations

  • Laboratory tests

  • X-rays

  • Orthopedic supplies (e.g. casts, splints, crutches)

  • Wound care supplies

Counseling & Psychiatry Services

If you receive services at CAPS that incur a charge, these charges will be billed to your student account unless you choose an alternate form of payment at the time of service. Psychiatric services will be billed to your insurance carrier unless you tell us not to at the time of service. You are responsible for co-payment as designated by your insurance carrier; see our Charges Policy. Please call CAPS office at 479-575-5276 for additional information.

Most of CAPS' services are included in the student health & wellness fee such as:  initial consultations, short-term individual counseling, group therapy, case management, 24-hour mental health emergency services, referral services, outreah services, and nurse consultations.

However, the below psychiatric services have charges associated.

  • Initial Psychiatric Consultation | Billed to Insurance
  • Follow-up Psychiatric Consultation | Billed to Insurance

If you have questions regarding CAPS charges, or feel as if you are unable to afford the fees associated with counseling services, please speak with your mental health clinician.

Insurance & Billing for Medical & Psychiatry

The health center can file claims with most health insurance plans. If you are unsure of if your insurance is in network, we recommend checking with your insurance and providing your insurance with a PWHC providers' name. All of our providers can be found on our Medical Providers Directory (i.e. GYN (Women's) Clinic Providers and Primary Care Providers).

*If you have any type of medicaid insurance, please have your primary care physician send a referral to the Pat Walker Health Center on your behalf prior to your appointment. This will allow the billing process with insurance to run more smoothly. For more information and resources, see the Arkansas Department of Human Services website

If you do not want the health center to file with your insurance provider, let us know at the time of your appointment.

Patients are financially responsible for all charges incurred during each visit, whether covered by insurance or not. Your insurance company may determine that some, or all of the charges incurred at the health center are not covered by your policy or should be applied to your deductible. While costs may vary for patients, most health plans must cover a set of preventative health services for all adults, women, and children (i.e. blood pressure screening, some immunizations, pap smear for women 21 to 65, and more). Patients are encouraged to contact their insurance carriers to obtain coverage information.

Patients who do not have insurance, or choose not file with insurance, will receive a self-pay discount. Note: You cannot change to insurance billing at a later time if you choose self-pay.

*The self-pay discount does not apply to certain STD testing as those charges have already been discounted and are not subject to further discounts.

Payment Options

The health center can accept payment by Apple Pay, Google Pay, VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or Razorbuck$. Charges can also be applied to your student UAConnect account.

Effective January 3, 2023 the health center is cashless.

Good Faith Estimate

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your health care will cost.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have certain types of health care coverage or who are not using certain types of health care coverage an estimate of their bill for health care items and services before those items or services are provided.

Student Health & Wellness Fee

The University of Arkansas requires all enrolled students to pay a mandatory health and wellness fee of $7.69 per credit hour. This fee enables the Pat Walker Health Center, University Recreation, and the Sexual & Relationship Violence Center to provide several health, safety, and wellness initiatives, programs, and resources for the campus community.
